Best Ways to Manage guilt and stress as a working mom

Imagine this: It’s 7:58 am and your morning is already hectic, You’re desperately trying to spread butter on toast with one hand, wanting to send a quick reply to a work email with the other, and shouting loud for your kid to put on his shoes, the clock is ticking away, and you later realize you’re now late for your first meeting of the day.

Meanwhile, someone has managed to spill orange juice all over your only clean blouse. Does this scene sound familiar?

Let’s be honest: working moms are basically superheroes, but sometimes even superheroes have days when their strengths aren’t just enough. The guilt, the stress, the feeling that you’re not doing your best for your job and kids, they all settle in your head, completely stressful and impossible to ignore. But let me tell you there are ways to navigate this guilt and stress.

1.Avoid too much perfection: If there’s anything that can help you keep your sanity intact, it is when you let go of the myth that your home needs to look perfect. And, honestly, it is impossible to maintain perfection . Some nights, dinner is a bowl of cereal or takeaway eaten straight from the plastic plate, and that’s perfectly okay. Your kids won’t remember the elaborate three-course meals, but they will remember the time you danced around the kitchen, talked about school while pouring their milk.

2.Maintain Your Energy: Be strategic about where you invest your energy. It's okay to prioritize and focus on what's truly important. "It's understandable to feel overwhelmed when taking on multiple responsibilities; perhaps it's worth focusing on one priority at a time."

Figure out what truly matters to you and your family, and give yourself permission to let the rest slide. Sometimes, “good enough” really is good enough. Just having healthy cupcakes instead of baking from scratch, is better most times.

3. Rest or Pause:  Please, don’t underestimate the power of a pause or rest, you can always take five-minute sanity breaks: Close the door, take a few deep breaths, maybe scroll through some memes or listen to a favorite song, whatever it takes to reset. Those tiny moments of self-care add up, it will help you face the next round of chaos with a little more patience and a lot less resentment.

4. Be Kind to yourself: We are often our own harshest critics, but showing up every day, even when it feels impossible, is an achievement in itself. Some days, you’ll crush it; other days, just making it through is victory enough. Give yourself credit for the effort, not just the outcome.

Bottom line

The stress and guilt are real, put all the points mentioned above into use, and if there’s a particular struggle weighing on you or a morning experience that left you on the verge of tears or laughter, please feel free to share it. Sharing our stories is the best way to remind ourselves that we’re doing better than we think.
