Alright, let’s get real—Canadian healthcare is “free” like you always hear, but if you’re a mom, you know it’s not actually free.

Like, congrats, your hospital birth won’t bankrupt you, but what about everything else?

Drugs for the kids, fixing your back after months of carrying a baby everywhere, even basic stuff like a dentist for your toddler’s “cavity—it all costs extra.

Basically, unless you have decent health insurance, get ready to spend more.

So what’s actually the best health insurance for moms? Honestly, it totally depends on where you’re with parenting a kid.

Let me tell you more about it:

If you're Pregnant or Trying? and you want extended health plus maternity leave.

Yeah, the province will handle your OB appointments and the hospital stay (that’s the easy bit).

But if you need prescription stuff or you want a semi-private hospital room, or you’re desperate for a lactation consultant, those aren’t free.

What should you look for as a mom in Canada?

- High prescription drug coverage: like  a bunch of mental health support, ($1,500-$2,500 a year or more), and  massage, physio,  chiro—these things actually save your body.

- Got Little Kids? It’s all about dental, drugs, and paramedical.

A dental checkup alone is like $200 or more per kid. And you will need meds for your kid, it can be painful for your bank account if you pay full price.

So get a plan with 80-100% dental, because seriously kids get sick at 2am on holidays, so make sure prescription drugs are covered (80-90%, low deductible.

-And for speech therapy, physio:  The surprise ADHD assessment? Adds up fast. look for $500-1,000 per year per practitioner.

-Stay-at-Home or Self-Employed mom?

If your job is an at home job, remember: employer coverage disappears if you leave. When you go full freelancing mom mode, you’ll want something that sticks with you.

You will need to look for a plan that can save you from headaches in case it develop.

-Mental Health? Don’t ignore this.

Moms, you’re kind of holding the universe together. Therapy in Canada is high and the price? ($120+ a session). Solid plans? They’ll give you $1,000 to $2,000 a year for psychologists, social workers.

The plans to Avoid?

- Super low annual maxes, like $500 for physio? it's not the best.

- High deductibles. Anything over $100 for families is pain. Otherwise, you will be covering too much before the insurance steps in.

- Plans with zero prescription drug coverage: A round of antibiotics is $40+; multiply that by a couple of kids and you’ll feel it.

Conclusion

There’s no magic “best” plan for every mom.

- Pregnant or postpartum? Make sure mental health and paramedical are solid, plus high drug coverage.

- Moms with kids under 12? Dental, drugs, and pediatric therapy resources are your must-haves.

- Flying solo or freelancing? Go for portability and plans you can handle and manage.

Honestly, the right policy is the one you actually use, the rest is just paperwork.
